What a film carriage system does

The film carriage holds the stretch-film roll and controls how film is delivered while the load or wrapping arm moves. Its design affects film tension, roll changes, containment consistency and which film specifications the supplier expects you to use.

  • Confirm the roll width, core and maximum roll diameter.
  • Ask how operators thread and change film without treating this page as an operating manual.
  • Request the carriage model and included controls in the written quote.

Mechanical brake vs powered prestretch

A basic carriage usually applies resistance as film leaves the roll. A powered-prestretch carriage uses rollers to elongate film before it reaches the pallet. Neither label proves the load will be secure: the supplier still needs the real load profile, film grade and containment target.

  • Ask whether the quoted ratio is fixed, adjustable or load-dependent.
  • Compare the supplier's recommended film gauge and grade for each carriage.
  • Do not compare percentage claims unless the test film, load and containment method are the same.

Put the film carriage in the quote comparison

Two pallet wrappers can look similar while including different carriage packages. Compare the whole film system instead of treating powered prestretch as a yes-or-no checkbox.

  • Carriage type and stated prestretch configuration.
  • Film roll specification and expected changeover frequency.
  • Film-break sensing, clamp or cut options, service access and spare-parts support.

Verify savings with a controlled trial

Film-use savings are operating assumptions, not guaranteed outcomes. Ask suppliers to document the starting film weight, wrapped load, number of wraps and accepted containment result so competing trials can be compared on the same basis.

  • Use representative stable and difficult loads.
  • Record film used per accepted load, not only a headline prestretch ratio.
  • Confirm that the trial result does not trade film savings for damaged product or unstable pallets.
